Project to improve the safety of Goma International Airport (DR Congo) - PASAG

The PASAG does aim to improve the infrastructure of Goma International Airport and to obtain the ICAO certification as an airport of category 4D. The main concerns at Goma International Airport are the safety issues and the reduced capacity due to the high risk in the region and the eruption of the Volcano Nyiragongo in 2009 which damaged up to 1/3 of the runway. Some works on the airport have been completed recently, but the 52 mil $ donated by the World Bank to the Congolese Government will help to complete all the works and to obtain the certification of Goma International Airport. To perform the necessary design of infrastructure in conformity with the international norms and standards has been the task of WAM Planer und Ingenieure AG.

The design includes the following necessary works:

  • cutting the Lava to extend the runway for 435m to achive the initial length of 3000m
  • reconstruction of the old existing taxiways and holding bays
  • clearing of obstacles and leveling of the runway and the taxiway
  • applying of designation and marking on the full length of the runway
  • construction of safety areas at both of the thresholds 18 and 36 of the runway (RESAs and SWYs)
  • service road around the runway inside the airport area
  • errection of a security wall and fence around the airport
  • construction of culverts under the pavements to pass the cables for the airfield lighting system
