Starting Point

The junction of Hinterriedholz, built in 1960, stretches to a total width of 20 meters. The points of conflict which are far from each other make it difficult to provide a clear and safe view of the traffic. The Aare Seeland mobil AG (asm) rail crossing which is equipped with a half-barrier system makes the situation even more complicated and no longer meets today's safety standards.

Due to the security problems as well as the requests of the municipalities of Riedholz and Flumenthal, an analysis of the conflict situation and a reconstruction proposal were developed in 1997. The "conventional junction" variant with a traffic light system including a connection to the rail crossing was evaluated in cooperation with representatives of the cantonal office for traffic and civil engineering (AVT), the municipalities and the asm and judged to be the best variant.

Tasks of WAM

WAM planners and engineers Ltd. was entrusted with the planning, implementation and overall management of all reconstruction measures in the entire junction area.

This is a brief List of the reconstruction measures:
• The existing node is replaced by a conventional node with a traffic light system including a connection to the asm level crossing.
• The concrete road is replaced with an asphalt road. • The pedestrian and bicycle guidance is redesigned.
• The railway line is straightened and the entire embankment renewed (project asm).
• The drainage in the entire road and rail area is adapted to the requirements of the office of environment.
• The 16kV overhead line of AEK is placed into the ground.
